To many, Chamonix is the undisputed mountain-sport capital of the world!
This Off-piste ski & snowboard mecca is home to the world's longest run, the Vallee Blanche (not really a piste at all, but a 23km ski down Europe's second largest glacier the Mer de Glace - "Sea of Ice"). The Grands Montets is one of greatest ski domains anywhere, with alpine ski trails ofr all abilities and some of the most exciting and accessible off-piste in Christendom. The Chamonix Valley is also the start of the awesome Haute Route, a ski-touring route of legend which skis climbs abseils and mountaineers its way from Mont Blanc (by Chamonx) to the Matterhorn (by Zermatt, Switzerland). If it sounds like it's all for expert snowboarders & skiers don't be put off, there's plenty of places to learn in Chamonix, especially on the edge of town and up on the sunny beginner and easy intermediate ski slopes of Le Tour... but the Chamonix Valley and especially Argentiere is renowned as the home of hardcore, both the steep-n-deep on the mountain... & the night life in Chamonix town centre. We have been told it's a single girl's heaven due to the chissel chin'd mountain men & a male to female ratio of 10 to 1. Whatever you're looking for from a ski holiday, you can almost certainly find it in Chamonix. Chamonix pronunciation: most english and french say "sham-on-ee" although, believe it or not, many in france choose to emphasize the "x" and pronounce chamonix "sham-on-icks" - SNOman notes that, in his time there (over 30 visits) he has never heard a local french chamoniard pronounce the "x".
